Reminiscing of 2019 at the Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town

December 20, 2019

As 2019 is drawing to a close we’d like to take a moment to look back, take stock and count our blessings. Indeed it was another bountiful year at the Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town, as we were happy to host so many of you, our dear friends, old and new, alike!

All senses adventures at the Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town

We shared great stories and quite some laughs over cocktails -or when too much partying got the better of us, healthy mocktails– by our Mykonos starlit pool; and at the hip & happening Semeli lobby lounge bar. We had our taste buds pleased and appeased, daily, from early till late: Starting as we meant to go, we wolved down our hearty and sumptuous, trademark Semeli breakfast, packed with seasonally inspired delicacies and authentic Greek treats, every morning till noon. In between laps -and whilst seeing and being seen- we enjoyed leisurely, mouthwatering, poolside lunches at Thioni, one of the best restaurants in Mykonos. And then, after putting on our finest, we spent some unforgettable evenings with Haute gastronomy and spellbinding live music at Krama, Mykonos premier fine dining spot.  We also had our fair share of merrymaking at Semeli the bar, Bao’s and Toy Room, in Little Venice’s most Instagrammed corner.

Good thing our Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town were just a lovely short stroll away from the nighttime action, awaiting to engulf us in their cocooned, designer-clad premisses. Of course, having the Aegeo, one of the best spas in Mykonos, right at our feet, ensured that we got all the rejuvenation, pampering and relaxation we could ask for, at the bacchanalian paradise that the island of the winds is.

Christmas Greetings from the Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town

Yes, life throughout the 2019 season was very sweet at the Semeli rooms & suites in Mykonos town. As we are preparing to wave our goodbyes to another fantastic year, we also can’t wait to partake in the seasonal festivities in Mykonos: This is the time when the famous Mykonian hospitality shines at its brightest, as islanders open their homes and hearts to relatives and friends to celebrate and to honor a host of fascinating old customs and traditions.

Granted, at this time of year, it is not the glamorous, cosmopolitan -perhaps not even particularly sunny- destination you’d expect; but the lucky few visiting Mykonos at Christmas will discover a potent and heady, quite unforgettable mix of devoutness, spirituality, and intense joy.

So like all locals on December 27th, we will be heading to Saint Stefanos church to pay tribute to the namesake holy man by singing and dancing to the sounds of traditional “tsabounes” (bagpipes) and violins, until the wee hours, in veritable Mykonos style.

On New Year’s Day, we will savor traditional Christmas carols from Delos and Mykonos sung by children’s and adults’ choirs taking to the alleyways of Mykonos town. We then shall feast on meat roast, onion pies, and honey pies as the custom dictates; and similarly, we will eat lard with greens or cabbage to attract wealth and abundance.
On Epiphany day we’ll admire youngsters braving the freezing waters in the Blessing of the Waters ceremony. Their goal is to be the first in retrieving the holy cross, for the one who succeeds is said to be blessed with good luck throughout the New Year!

Come dusk on the same day we will attend the Balosia. Hailing from Venetian times this time-honored custom marks the commencement of the nautical period and is to be celebrated every year on January 6th, with traditional dances and folk music.
